SITE 004 - Mentone, Kingston - Concept
This concept explores the potential of a small community intervention designed to strengthen neighbourhood life. Based on an existing park the kiosk aims to bring local activities, informal gathering spaces, and community services within a 20 minute walk. The proposal encourages everyday encounters. The architecture responds sensitively to its context while activating the street through its canopy, sense of permanence, and curved frontage. The design approach is based on the following principles:
- Its colourful steel structure and canopy, support a range of activities. The result is a welcoming community hub that brings people together.
- Open space for eating and drinking, activating the street while adding character, visual interest and natural surveillance.
- The brick construction and striking canopy create a sense of permanence, connecting the passerby to the place, while the large glazing makes the kiosk inviting and accessible.
- As a supporting ancillary use alongside the street’s primary residential function creates activity throughout the day, strengthens local identity and encourages social interaction.
